Live quickly, face new health issues.
People who had an unhealthy relationship with smoking, drinking and training at the beginning of their lives ended up in the rapid path of mental and physical health problems in the mid -1930s, according to a new study by the University of Applied Sciences in Laurea.
“Our findings highlight the importance of treating dangerous health behaviors, such as smoking, severe drinking and physical inactivity, as soon as possible to prevent the damage they do from construction over the years,” said the main author Dr. Tiia Kekäläinen in a news announcement on April 24.
The issues caused by bad habits can arise as early as 36 years old, the study said.
Researchers found that there is an increased risk of health issues and depression as the individual increasingly participates in smoking, drinking and physical inactivity.
More specifically, the study found that smoking was associated with poor mental health, exercising less than once a week was associated with poor physical health and alcohol led to a decrease in mental and physical health.
According to the numbers from the study and alcohol data change in the UK, a heavy drink is considered to be a man who consumes approximately 735 12 bottles of ounce with 5% ABV beer per year and a woman who consumes approximately 515 ounce bottles with 5% ABV beer per year.
But the heavy classification of drinking may vary depending on the type of drink a person consumed, for changing alcohol in the UK.
“Non -transmitted diseases such as heart disease and cancer cause almost three -quarters of deaths worldwide,” Dr. Kekäläinen. “But following a healthy lifestyle, an individual can shorten their risk of developing these diseases and reduce their chances of an early death.”
The study followed the mental and physical health of hundreds of people born in 1959 in the southern Finnish city of Jyväskylä.
Participants’ data were collected when they were 27 (1986), 36 (1995), 42 (2001), 50 (2009) and 61 (2020-2021).
The study initially included 326 participants and eventually ended with 206 participants.
Although the study concluded that “the prevention of these behaviors at the beginning of adulthood and middle -age is essential to avoid their accumulation and subsequent health risks,” Dr. Kekäläinen suggested that people can still make positive changes that can affect the rest of their lives.
“However, it’s never too late to change in healthiest habits. The adoption of healthiest habits in middle life also has benefits for older age,” said Dr. Kekäläinen.
Dr. Kekäläinen warned that these results may vary for younger generations due to “cultural and social changes and partially different dangerous behaviors that occur nowadays”.
A 2023 Gallup study found that approximately 38% of adults under 35 claim to never drink, representing a 10% increase compared to what was reported two decades ago.
The study authors add that they did not examine the dietary habits of the participants and suggest that other factors should be considered in future studies.
