Wegmans is betting that the dedication similar to the cult of his buyers will keep from the supermarket alleys to his first Big Apple restaurant.
The rochester-based chain, which opened at Astor Place in 2023, with lines that began to form at 4 in the morning-will launch a Japanese-themed dinner adjacent to the Next Door shop on April 30.
The opening comes against the anxiety of the unpredictability of Trump’s tariffs, which currently hit Japan with a 10% tax on all imports.
“As with most new restaurants, we will see how they all are resolved, and look at our sales mix. You can project everything you want, but how it works financially will be determined in the coming weeks,” said John Emerson, WEGMANS Vice President of Restaurant Foods, who was also named a Japanese ambassador.
The restaurant will have a sushi counter – and the champagne champagne (the latest trend to hit Manhattan) – with a menu that offers flavors spoken by Toyosu Fish Market, with which Wegmans parted for 14 years.
“It was always the dream of opening a restaurant in New York City, but we knew we couldn’t eat elephant in a bite and open both [the grocery store and the restaurant] At the same time, ”Emerson said.
The privately owned chain, which opened its first Big Apple location in Brooklyn in 2019, operates 112 grocery stores across the East coast.
The other door – only the third Wegmans restaurant is opened, with the other two located in Rochester – will be poisoned by Kazuya Matsuoka chefs, formerly abbut Hana of Toronto, and Oliver Lange, once Zuma.
“We are a contemporary Japanese concept, with a philosophy of embracing the quality of ingredients and techniques,” Lange said.
Signature vessels include marinated koji with grass-fed grass and pate salmon with crudites and rice crackers, Lange said.

Two-level space sites 133 people and contain the floor in ceiling windows, a marble bar-with 12 additional places-and green olive booths. There are two extra tables outside and they are currently applying for outdoor meals.
